The Holy Spirit – The Voice of Jesus

David Sheller   -

“New Testament people receive guidance, direction, and oversight of their lives from scripture, which is infallible, and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.” – Graham Cooke

Have you ever wished Jesus would come to your house in person for a counseling session? The kind of session where you could sit down with Him and hear Him give answers for all those questions about what to do with your life? Things like what job to take, where to live, who to marry, how to respond in difficult relationships, etc. Well, what we don’t always see is that through His Holy Spirit Jesus is very present in us and ready to lead us to the answers for these very personal questions.

The Bible does not contain every detail we need to know for our personal and individual journey with Christ. The Holy Spirit is our guide into the now words and plans that God has for us personally. These things will reflect and be held to the foundation of scripture, but they are personal to us.

John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

The Spirit doesn’t come with His own message for us. When He hears, He speaks. He will tell us of things to come and I believe He is the voice of Jesus. Why, look at the words that follow…”He will glorify me, for He will take what is MINE and DECLARE it to you.” These are the words of Jesus.

The word “Prophecy” makes some people very nervous and others act down right weird. But Paul instructed us to desire the gift of prophecy above all spiritual gifts. I believe this instruction comes from a revelation that this gift is the key to conversation with Jesus. Communication is the key to any quality relationship. Not a one-sided conversation but a conversation where Jesus doesn’t have to just listen to what we say but we here His response as well. Example: My relationship with my wife would be pretty useless if our communication stopped with our love letters and I could never know when she was communicating to me now.

The gift of prophecy reveals to us something we did not know before, whether past, present or future. The thing secret is revealed. But, the secret is not some gnosis (secret knowledge) but more a noetics (experience) of the revelation of Jesus. Who we say that Jesus is is who we are! – Leonard Sweet

When we let the Spirit speak to us we get to know what Jesus is thinking about us or our situation. We have access to the MIND of Christ. We have the thoughts, purposes, counsel, plans, and knowledge of Christ all through the actions of the Holy Spirit. We are united to Christ by the spirit and therefore SHARE His thoughts, His will.

1 Corinthians 2:16… For, “Who can know what the Lord is thinking? Who can give him counsel?” But we can understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ. – NLT

Now, if we can counsel with Christ via the Spirit, think of how we not only help ourselves but we can help others as well. Our personal revelation of Jesus Christ is not the end result of our Christianity but the beginning; a catalyst for us to be powerfully effective witnesses for the King and His Kingdom! The essence of hearing from God and having any prophetic gifting is to be a testimony of Jesus.

Revelation 19:10 …”For the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy.”

Just like any friendship, the more conversational my relationship with Jesus is, the deeper my knowledge of Him. Remember, conversation with Jesus is not just me talking at Him but taking time to listen while He talks with me, often letting Him lead the conversation. Understanding that He desires to live in us and through us, we begin to see that He brings us into His plans for building relationship with others as well. Jesus speaks through us to others.

When we walk through this life powered by the Holy Spirit, we become true ambassadors for the King and His Kingdom. We are His body by which He acts and speaks and fills this earth with His presence. When Jesus speaks His Holy Spirit speaks to us and through us. The Holy Spirit will give us all the understanding and words needed for any situation in which we find ourselves.

Luke 12:12 “…for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.” – NIV

Contrary to some, I believe there is plenty of evidence that Jesus is still speaking to, and teaching His followers through His Holy Spirit. We have access to our King and He cares deeply about each of our personal needs and the personal needs of those in our circle of influence. When He speaks I say we listen.
